To be perfectly honest, I can’t remember where the idea for this story came from. It languished in my writing notebook for a year or so before I figured out how to start it. I then started giving five pages at a time to a critique group I’m in, which forced me to finish writing it. One member of that group joked that I had fallen into the “writing a story about vampires” trap. But I think Morgan is an interesting take on a “vampire.”

I think the group only had two more sections to critique before I finally came up with a title for this. Which is odd, because I’m usually pretty good with titles. For weeks I’d open my notebook and write “Vampire title” and then scribble out random phrases like “undying” and “absorbing life” searching for a title. But after doing that for a month or so, one day I was revising the story and I got towards the end where Morgan talks about being “reborn” as new people, and “Phoenix” came to mind. A few seconds later, I remembered Geoffrey talking about Morgan hiding his gift, and figured that would be a pretty lonely life. Thus, the title was born.

One place I submitted this story to asked for a more action packed rewrite. One suggestion was to basically have Morgan involved in a shootout with the crew. I purposely didn’t take that route because it’s a story set in the future on a starship filled with the best and brightest of humanity, not in the Old West. I hope you didn’t find this version too boring.

Note on the 2016 Revision

A few months before the 2016 Election, I figured I should revise Political Pies, my collection of political short stories published a few months before the 2012 Election. This revision would correct any typos and smooth out any rough areas. Once I decided to do that, it didn’t take long for me to realize I should do that for all of my ebooks. My plan is to do this every four years, all to keep me putting my best words forward.
